Imagine you're at a football game or basketball practice and a teammate suddenly collapses. Everyone panics — but you know exactly what to do. That's the power of learning CPR and first aid as a young athlete.

Middle school is the perfect time to learn these skills. You're old enough to understand them, strong enough to perform them, and surrounded by sports and activity where emergencies can happen.

What Can Happen on the Field?

Sports like football, basketball, and track can lead to more than just bruises. Heat exhaustion, concussions, and in rare but serious cases — sudden cardiac arrest — can happen to athletes of any age.

The American Heart Association reports that sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in young athletes. The difference between life and death is often just minutes — and that's where you come in.

Hands-Only CPR: Simple but Powerful

The AHA's Hands-Only CPR is easy to learn and doesn't require mouth-to-mouth breathing. Just two steps:

Step 1: Call 911 immediately.

Step 2: Push hard and fast in the center of the chest — about 100–120 times per minute. Think of the beat of the song "Stayin' Alive" — it's actually the perfect rhythm!

Ask your school about offering a CPR training day. It's fun, fast, and could make you the most important person on the team.
